The Cohen building, owned by Atty. Harry Cohen,
is located on the green at 62 Bridge Street, New Milford, Connecticut
and is one of the most impressive landmarks in New Milford.
It houses the law offices of Atty. Harry Cohen, the law offices
of Attorneys Allingham and Spillane, as well as the newly created
Cohen Resource Center for Family and Children. The Resource Center
was organized last year as a non-profit center when Atty. Cohen
became deeply concerned about the declining values of our troubled
society in his home town of New Milford and aware of the need for
a crisis center for family and children. |
The Historic Victorian Building...
was constructed by Charles Merritt Beach in 1896, grandfather
of Charles Barlow. Beach also built the Lillis Building adjacent
to the Cohen Building and the historic C.M. Beach Building on
the corner of Bridge and West Streets as well as other landmark
buildings in New Milford.
The building was originally built as a two family house for Dr.
Benjamin Bostwick and Frank Soule and their families as tenants
of C.M. Beach. The doctor carried on his medical practice in the
building until his death in 1935. His sister, Clara, who became
his housekeeper, resided there until her death in 1941. Dr. Lovelace
became a tenant, followed by Dr. George Lataif, who purchased
the property from the heir of C.M. Beach in 1949. He practiced
medicine there and he also lived there with his wife Helen and
his daughters, Mimi Lataif and Atty. Suzanne Power, popular former
Judge of Probate.
In 1970 Atty. Cohen and Charles Lehn acquired the property from
Mrs. Lataif and in 1989 Atty. Cohen became the sole owner.
